Shortly before the end of World War I, the Woman's Committee of the Missouri Division, Council of National Defense, began soliciting biographical and service record information from Missouri soldiers, sailors, and marines who served in World War I. The information was collected by questionnaires issued by the organization and participation was voluntary so this is not a complete record of all Missouri soldiers, sailors, and marines. The questionnaires typically include the serviceman’s name, current location and address, date and place of induction, date and place of birth, branch and unit they are serving with, and county where the information was collected. These questionnaires, because of the timing of their issuance, were typically completed by family members or by the county representative from the Woman's Committee of the Missouri Division, Council of National Defense. The questionnaires are primarily from the following Missouri counties: Barton, Buchanan, Butler, Cape Girardeau, Clay, Cole, Dade, Jasper, Johnson, Lawrence, Lincoln, Linn, McDonald, Miller, Moniteau, Pettis, Pike, St. Francois, St. Louis, St. Louis City, Ste. Genevieve, Wayne, and Wright.
